Overview

The gorge, on the Southern Tablelands of NSW, 190km southwest of Sydney and 35km east of Goulburn, descends 400m at its deepest point. Slot Canyon, in the base of the gorge, has ¬vertical walls 275m high.

  1. A slot canyon is significantly deeper than it is wide. Some slot canyons can measure less than 1 metre across at the top but drop more than 30 metres to the floor of the canyon. In Australia most slot canyons are formed in sandstone and in the Blue Mountains the canyons are full of rainforest plant species.

  3. The larger side canyons are very impressive, offering many multi-day hiking routes through remote scenic areas well away from the South Rim crowds, and often there are narrowish sections with typical slot-like features of pools, chokestones, waterfalls and deep water-carved channels, as is the case with Milkweed Canyon. But the best slots are.

GEAR:1-60 m ( 197 ft. ) rope, and 1-30 m ( 99 ft. ) rope (or 15 m ( 50 ft. ) and a pullcord). Wetsuit in most conditions, or long sleeves and pants in hot conditions. A headlamp can be helpful in the dark sections, but is not required.
WATER:Generally a few small pools. Wetsuit in cool conditions. The canyon floor does not see much sun.
FLASHFLOOD:High. The canyon has a small drainge, but is very narrow. It would not take much rain directly over the canyon to flood.

Alcatraz starts like a Mountain Dew commercial, with a 50 m ( 165 ft. ) rappel off your car bumper. With such a dramatic start, it is hard to imagine the canyon getting any better or more adventurous, but it does! Aside from the go-big-or-go-home entrance rappel, the rest of the canyon is a deep, dark, sinuous slot.

The canyons name comes from a group (Scott Patterson and Michael Kelsey) that were descending the slot. As the narrows began growing tighter and tighter, they were unsure they could finish the canyon. Mike led a particularly bold route out the canyon by climbing the right side wall about half way through using hooks. Thus, the canyon had gained its name and a bit of a reputation. These days, knowing that the canyon is passable, it is popular outing for intermediate or better canyoneers.

Bungonia Slot Canyon (nsw)

The narrows are challenging, and tiring, so small packs are in order. Given the physical nature of the canyon and a fair bit of climbing and squeezing, it is not a good choice for beginners.

Arresting sandstone walls, ever-present waterfalls and abundant native plants line the awesome Grand Canyon track near Blackheath in the Blue Mountains. The historic loop track takes you into the heart of this World Heritage-listed landscape. It's an intimate and adventurous track which walkers have trodden since 1907.

Setting out from Evans lookout, the well-shaded track meanders through luscious native vegetation of ferns and golden wattles, and remains close to Greaves Creek, all of which combine to make this a particularly good walk for the summer months. Shorten the loop by leaving a second car at the Evans Lookout Road entrance or spend the day and stop for lunch at the nearby picnic area before returning to the lookout.

Although there are loads of semi-ledges which make up this challenging walk, you don’t need specialist hiking or abseiling equipment, so comfortable walking shoes are all you’ll need to get out there and explore. Still feeling energetic? Try the nearby Cliff Top walking track.
